In a quirky turn of events, several AI models in China have stumbled upon a seemingly simple question that has left them baffled: should one walk or drive to a car wash located just 50 meters away from home? This question, which might seem straightforward to humans, has proven to be a challenging conundrum for artificial intelligence.
The incident began in February when a Mastodon user posed the question to four mainstream AI models: 'I want to wash my car, my home is only 50 meters away from the car wash, should I walk or drive?' The answer was obvious to most people: since the car is at home, one would logically need to drive to the car wash. However, AI models had a different perspective.
Among the models tested, some suggested walking, arguing that it was simpler and more environmentally friendly. Others recommended driving, pointing out that walking would take longer than driving due to the need to start and stop the car. One model even went so far as to suggest that driving to the car wash and then returning would make the car dirty again, thus reinforcing the need for driving.
The results were astonishing. A systematic test of 53 mainstream AI models by Opper AI revealed that only 11 of them answered the question correctly, with over 80% of the models suggesting walking. When the same question was asked 10 times, only 5 models were able to consistently provide the correct answer. Gemini, one of the models, even added a touch of sarcasm to its response.
This peculiar incident highlights the challenges AI faces when dealing with real-world scenarios that involve everyday logic and practicality.
