WikiBan: English Wikipedia Bans AI from Editing Entries
English Wikipedia has implemented a new policy, banning AI from creating or rewriting articles due to concerns over content accuracy and adherence to the site's core principles.
In a significant move, the English version of Wikipedia has officially banned the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the creation or rewriting of its articles. The decision, which was passed by a volunteer editor majority, came after a vote with 40 in favor and 2 against. This new policy is a response to the growing concerns about the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated content, which often fails to meet Wikipedia's core content standards.
The new policy explicitly states that AI-generated text is generally not to be used for content creation, except under specific exceptions. These exceptions include the use of AI tools for basic text polishing by editors, provided that AI does not generate new content and the modifications are reviewed and approved by humans before being included in an article. The policy also cautions editors to be cautious, as AI might alter the original intent of the text, leading to discrepancies between the content and the referenced sources. Additionally, the use of AI for cross-language translations must follow specific guidelines.
The policy was drafted with assistance from the Wikipedia AI Cleanup Project, a volunteer group dedicated to identifying and removing AI-generated errors from the site. The proposal's editor, Ilyas Lebleu, noted that the community's sentiment regarding AI-generated content has shifted from cautious optimism to genuine concern. Over the past few months, there has been a surge in management reports highlighting issues caused by AI, leading to an overwhelming workload for human editors.
Until now, the Wikimedia Foundation had been hesitant to impose a complete ban on AI due to the use of some automated tools. In a previous preliminary guideline, the English Wikipedia had only banned the use of AI to create new entries. Similar AI restriction policies have been implemented by Stack Overflow and the German version of Wikipedia in recent months.
This decision reflects the ongoing debate about the role of AI in content creation and the challenges of maintaining the integrity and reliability of information on the internet. As AI technology continues to evolve, it is likely that similar discussions will arise in other online platforms and communities, highlighting the need for a careful balance between technological innovation and the preservation of quality and accuracy in information sharing.
