Experience the fusion of ancient culture and modern technology at the newly refreshed 'Xianghu·Elegant Melodies' show in Hangzhou, China.
The 'Xianghu·Elegant Melodies' show, a grand water-based live performance, has re-launched its 2026 season, captivating audiences with its blend of ancient Chinese culture and cutting-edge technology. This performance, which has already won multiple cultural and tourism awards, features a digital character named 'Nongchao'er,' a digital torchbearer from the Hangzhou Asian Games opening and closing ceremonies. This character, which has become a symbol of civilization, guides viewers through an 8,000-year cultural journey across the Xianghu Lake at night.
'Nongchao'er' is not just a technological symbol but a cultural carrier, created from the collective memories and gazes of countless viewers. The narrative takes the audience through various historical periods, from the vigorous struggle of the ancient people of the Cross-River Bridge, the passing of the torch of the Liangzhu civilization, the tender love of the Wuyue Dynasty, the bustling streets of the Southern Song Dynasty, to the digital pulse of modern Hangzhou. This immersive experience turns the performance into a dialogue of civilization that is both tangible and empathetic.
The visual effects are breathtaking, with the natural scenery of Xianghu Lake as the backdrop. The show utilizes advanced technology such as a rising and tilting water stage, multi-layer water screens, water and fire effects, a 270° holographic image, mobile ice screens, and an impressive drone show. The 300 drones forming the image of 'Nongchao'er' and lighting up the main torch tower were particularly awe-inspiring, leaving the audience in a state of wonder. One viewer commented that the moment 'Nongchao'er' made eye contact with them was particularly touching, feeling as if the character had genuine emotions.
The first performance was accompanied by the 'Xianghu Elegant Melodies with the Wind' event, featuring over 20 market stalls, NPC parades, and dance flash mobs. The show has also introduced special themed performances for various festivals and regular affordable shows to thank citizens and tourists. In addition, the project offers a variety of activities, including customized services, professional meeting venues, and catering solutions, to enrich the cultural and tourism experience around Xianghu Lake.
As the 'sister lake' of West Lake, Xianghu Lake is becoming an important cultural landmark in Hangzhou's tourism development. This show, with its deep cultural roots, is a testament to the vibrant blend of tradition and modernity in Hangzhou's nightlife, offering a unique cultural experience that resonates with both locals and visitors from around the world.
